ST USB PD controller introduces hybrid patented new technology to reduce the difficulty of software development for advanced functions
ST updates proprietary AUTORUN algorithm, basic charging operation does not require software
STMicroelectronics STUSB4531 USB Power Transfer (PD) Sink Controller introduces a new hybrid mode, which simplifies the design and development of USB PD optional functions and enhances the added value of USB power supply and charging devices.

STUSB4531 is equipped with a certified hardware implemented USB PD protocol stack, combined with STMicroelectronics' proprietary AUTORUN algorithm, enabling charging negotiation, voltage monitoring, and power management functions without the need for software. The AUTORUN algorithm can simplify the design and development of battery charging and VBUS power supply components in portable audio devices, wearable devices, set-top boxes, Wi Fi access points, medical equipment, lighting fixtures, and other product equipment. The newly updated algorithm can negotiate with communication adapters to ensure optimal charging parameter configuration in different application scenarios, including adjustable voltage supply (AVS) and high-power charging in battery depletion mode, accelerating device power recovery.
The newly added hybrid technology in STUSB4531 allows external application processors to interact with the protocol stack, utilizing the protocol layer to perform USB PD communication, enabling engineers to more flexibly implement functions such as battery message passing, data role exchange, alternate mode, and vendor defined message (VDM) passing, while reducing software development difficulty and accelerating the launch of new products.
Representative applications of USB data cable charging include hard disk drives, point of sale payment devices (POS), printers, drones, and portable industrial devices. Although VR headsets, infotainment devices, portable displays, and game consoles typically integrate USB power with DisplayPort Alternate mode or Thunderbolt protocol, VDM technology can enhance the power charging performance of consumer accessories and medical devices.
The STUSB4531 controller integrates the high-speed performance and simplicity of hardware solutions with the flexibility of software, which can promote USB-C ® The widespread application of interface charging and power supply technology conforms to global ecological design standards and helps reduce electronic waste. The chip has passed the latest USB-C ® 2.4 and USB PD3.2 standard certification, and comply with the IEC 62680 standard specified by the European Union.
STUSB4531 has a comprehensive development ecosystem, including evaluation board (EVAL-CSC007V1), certified minimalist reference design (EVAL-CSC006V1), graphical user interface (STSW-STUSB020), and NVM programmer (STSW-STUSB021). The open-source software library (STSW-STUSB022) is also about to be released.
STUSB4531 has now been put into production, using 3mm x 3mm QFN16 and 2.3mm x 2.3mm CSP16 chip level packaging.
