The LAN878x and LAN888x PHY series provide secure, reliable, and scalable Ethernet connections for automotive and industrial systems

With the widespread adoption of single pair Ethernet (SPE) and full Ethernet architectures by designers in the automotive and industrial fields to support software defined vehicles (SDVs) and complex industrial networks, the market demand for secure and scalable connectivity solutions continues to grow. Microchip Technology Inc. today launched the LAN878x and LAN888x series of single pair Ethernet (SPE) PHY transceivers, offering 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1, and dual rate 100/1000BASE-T1 specifications, designed to create secure, reliable, and scalable Ethernet connections for automotive and other mission critical applications.
LAN878x and LAN888x PHY integrated hardware level MACsec security engine, compliant with IEEE ® The 802.1AE-2018 standard provides frame level confidentiality, data integrity, and playback protection without increasing system latency or software complexity. The product natively supports Time Sensitive Networks (TSN), which can meet the deterministic and low latency communication requirements of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), regional gateways, and safety critical control networks.
In addition to safety and performance, the LAN878x and LAN888x series also offer enhanced functional safety design for ISO 26262 ASIL-B systems. Compared to traditional SPE PHY solutions, its advanced on-chip diagnostics and link monitoring capabilities can enhance system visibility, accelerate fault detection, and support more comprehensive system level security mechanisms.
To simplify platform expansion and design reuse, the LAN878x and LAN888x series achieve pin compatibility between models 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1, while supporting SGMII and RGMII host interfaces. This compatibility allows designers to reuse existing hardware designs while expanding network bandwidth to meet constantly evolving performance requirements.
Charlie Forni, Vice President of Networking and Connectivity at Microchip, said, "As in car networks continue to evolve, vehicle manufacturers need a clear and efficient path to expand Ethernet performance. The LAN878x and LAN888x series support design reuse while providing higher data rates and stronger security performance. By integrating MACsec directly into PHY, we help designers enhance network protection without increasing system complexity. ”
The LAN878x series includes LAN8781, LAN8781M, LAN8782, and LAN8782M; The LAN888x series includes LAN8881, LAN8881M, LAN8882, LAN8882M, LAN8883, LAN8883M, LAN8884, and LAN8884M. Models with suffix 'M' support MACsec security function. All devices have high reliability, with a maximum junction temperature of up to 150 ° C, meeting the first level working conditions of automobiles (-40 ° C to+125 ° C).
In addition to the automotive field, the LAN878x and LAN888x series are also widely used in industrial automation, robotics, aerospace electronics, and other industrial and critical task application scenarios that require deterministic Ethernet communication.
