Flexible current limiting settings enhance the driving capability of resistive, capacitive, or inductive loads
The IPS1050LQ low side switch chip launched by STMicroelectronics (ST) provides flexible overcurrent protection function, including fixed and dynamic current limiting configurations to safely handle high surge currents. The maximum rated voltage of the output stage of this chip is 65V, which can be used for equipment such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), factory automation, and CNC machine tools.

This chip has three pins for selecting dynamic/static modes and setting current limit values, and can set eight current limit values. In static mode, there are two methods to set the current limiting activation value and threshold: one is to use an external resistor, and the other is to use a microcontroller GPIO port or an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to drive these three pins. The method of selecting dynamic mode is to connect a capacitor to one or more of these three pins. Considering surge current, the initial current limit can be set to a maximum of 25A. The current limit value is automatically reduced in segments until it reaches the preset value, and the duration of each current reduction stage depends on the capacitor value.
IPS1050LQ is based on STMicroelectronics' market tested M0T5 VIPower technology, with a typical on resistance RDS (on) of only 25m Ω, providing high-efficiency switching operation for resistive, capacitive, or inductive loads (including DC-13 standard loads in accordance with IEC 60947-5-1). The active clamping function ensures that inductive loads quickly demagnetize when turned off. The internal electrical safety functions include undervoltage protection, overvoltage protection, overload protection, short circuit protection, ground disconnection detection, VCC disconnection detection, and thermal protection with dedicated overheating indicator pins.
The X-NUCLEO-DOL10A1 expansion board of STM32 Nucleo development board allows developers to understand the diagnostic and driving capabilities of IPS1050LQ, including evaluating multi-channel modules by stacking and plugging multiple boards.
IPS1050LQ is now in mass production and comes in a 6mm x 6mm QFN32L package.
